An experiment in group decision making - a collaborative design brief :
This editable post [can admin make this a wiki post please ] is the Design Brief for Phase II of the building work.
For the first week it’s open season - any one can add as many items and headers as they want, but add only - no deletion at this stage , even if one persons item contradicts the other, add what ever you want as long as it’s in the style of a Design Brief - a short summation of what (not how) you want / need*.
Then after a week we see what we have. If there are any completely contradictory items, we deal with this through a vote, then the rest we prioritise though an order of preference vote (the mechanics of this to be figured out in more detail when we get the results in but probably Doodle).
Once we sign off the brief we can give it to a select team to come up with the best solutions.
*If you want to explain or elaborate on what you’ve added use the thread below but only short summations in the document please.

SOUTH LONDON MAKERSPACE:
PHASE II
DESIGN BRIEF
South London Makerspace (SLM) is to refurbish the second half of its space. This half of the space is to house workshop(s) of some description, as there is all ready a ‘clean’ working space in the front of the space. This document outlines the nature of those workshop and other types of utility spaces.
General Infrastructure
The space will have:
- power
- lighting
- data
- plumbed sink
- storage for
- infrequently used tools.
- power tools, small and not so small
- sewing machines and associated accessories
- members’ projects
- piles of random junk that spawn and multiply in the darkness
- our collection of vintage electronic equipment (might be umbrella’d by ‘junk’ category)
- μMeet kit: boxes of shared components
- BBQ equipment
- Construction stuff: plumbing electrics bits and bobs
- Some kind of compressed air - useful for LOADS of stuff
##Activities & Facilities

Assembly Area
An area that for the assembly and finishing of larger projects, e.g. beds, dining tables or smallish rockets
- Spray booth for application of finish
TOOLS
- …
INFRASTRUCTURE
- …
AREA NEEDED
- a marked out area of floor 2.4m x 2m in a non-dusty area
Ceramics Area
A space for working with clay: a great rapid prototyping/thinking material
TOOLS
- Small table
- Selection of moulding tools
- potters wheel
- Tub for storage of clay
- Shelf or cupboard for air drying work

Plant and growing space
Projects that want to deal with algae, plant matter and growing things
TOOLS
Grow lamp
Hydroponics pump
I have already printed the chimney.!
INFRASTRUCTURE
space
power
A collapsing table area
Getting Rid of Stuff
Yes, that is an activity! We need to control junk…especially ‘useful’ junk.
It could be a series of bays marked with “time till disposal” and the gear is moved on a bay each week until disposed, unless someone claims it for use.
NEEDS
- A series of storage bays with signs on
Another Activity
A brief description
TOOLS
- …
INFRASTRUCTURE
- …
Casting things
n.b. in resin or low temp metals for now
Tools:
Vacuum forming mechiean
- vacuum chamber for evacuating silicone, or lost wax moulds.
- pressure chamber for doing the exact opposite.
- centrifuge, for flinging things into moulds.
Infrastructure:
- Some kind of pad to do hot things on that won’t burn straight through the floor.
- Extraction. Lots of Extraction. And a small fume cupboard
BICYCLE MAINTENENCE
INFRASTRUCTURE
- Wall mounted Bike Stand?
TOOLS - Freestanding Bike Stand
- Bike tools!
Vaccum forming
Vacuum forming is a simplified version of thermoforming, whereby a sheet of plastic is heated to a forming temperature, stretched onto a single-surface mold, and forced against the mold by a vacuum (suction of air).
see Wikipedia on vac forming
TOOLS
- Vac forming frame and heating element
INFRASTRUCTURE
- dependant on compressed air/vaccum from other infrastructure project
##Overarching Needs
-
Visual connection between all areas of the arch. For safety and community
-
Design for versatility. In order to maximise use of space
-
storage space in snug
##Noise Pollution
The construction of Phase II should prevent too much noise disturbing those in the clean space. Fire regs may mean some noise is audible but not enough that people in the clean space can’t be heard talking.
Noise pollution should also not disturb neighbours out the back. The solid acoustic wall at the back is a condition of our tenancy.
##People with Disabilities
- The space should be accessible for people with limited mobility.
- The workshop spaces can’t at this stage cater for chair users.
- At this stage, the workshop spaces should, where practical cater for chair users.
##Pests
As pretty much anywhere in London, rats are not far away and should not be encouraged to make the arch their home. In practice:
- Don’t attract them by never leaving any food or scraps unsealed in the space when empty. Bins don’t count, they will be (and have been) got into unless firmly closed.
- Keep them out by ‘sealing’ the perimeter of the arch. Sealing here is a pragmatic matter, something effective to a rat-size. Currently the lean-to is outside of this perimeter; the rear wall has wire mesh fitted, and the door to the lean-to should be shut when the arch is empty.
-We could extend the perimeter by adding mesh around the lean-to. - If rats are detected in the space, traps are to be left and the rats disposed of. So far, the gutters have been practical for this.

##Applicable Building Regulations:
###Fire
Phase 1 room is the “escape room” because it has the exit door in it,
You must not pass through more than one door between anywhere in the building and the escape room.
Therefore:
