I joined in late August just before heading off to the nearest continent for some work…
According to my bank, two direct debits have gone out but I can’t add my name to the waiting lists for inductions. Do I need to get my keyfob before I get enabled on those threads in discourse?

You need to link your membership and discourse accounts.
Except you don’t cos I just did it for you

The waiting lists are all WiKis, you should be able to add yourself. When you first click in the ‘edit this wiki’ you see the last edit IIRC. You then need to find another edit icon, click that and add yourself.
