In theory you can submit without a Patent lawyer, and the cost is low. How ever a Patent lawyer can drive a coach and horse through anything submitted by a amateur. So you get what pay for.
Why not Open Source it and use the easier to defend trademarks route ?

Have you ever done it ? If so how much do they cost? And any more information on the other alternative methods
Have one via work (the shame), they costs £10k x many.
Depending upon what it is, trademarks are £100x a few, So if the brand is strong then say Hover is associated with vacuum cleaner with out needing patients. Commercially the trade mark may be worth more. Of course the only reason to go down the patient route is for commercial reasons.
However - Open Source hardware and software is the way to go.
Don’t think trademark could work for this one and i don’t have 10k handy so will probably just leave it as one of those good ideas .
Surpose open source it and market pcb’s on the internet .
The electronics diy thing is picking up and i don’t need to make a million.
Dyson is an example. They seem to be paranoid about IP and patents.
People by dyson mostly for reasons nothing to do with that.
They give you aa headstart in the marketplace. And cheap Chinese versions if electronics appear very quickly. But you’d still need to pay lawyers to chase them…
When I get a bit of time i will build a full size prototype and see if anyone can figure out how to sell it…
