Paper all over the laser cutter bed

Hello lovely @lasers people!

I came down for a quick cutting session on the laser yesterday and found quite a bit of paper bits stuck to the top of the bed. It looked like somebody cleaned it with the blue roll paper but quite a few bits got ripped and stuck to the metal structure (pic attached). Could that catch fire? I did remove them before using the laser but took quite a while.

I also noticed that the bed is now nearly completely covered with dirty burnt leftovers. I tried scraping them off and they do come off but takes ages to do it manually. Do the @lasertechs know a way to clean it quickly? Like using some special cleaning liquid or something? I am happy to do it if you point me in the right direction!

Many Thanks,
Michele

Thanks for flagging this up. In general folks, please try and remember to leave the cutter in as clean a state as possible when finishing up your jobs.

That said, the honeycomb is considered a consumable (albeit a slow one), and all machines end up like this in the fullness of time. It might be worth putting some thought into replacement, just as soon as there are more lasertech’s on hand to give it some thought.

@tomnewsom measured this up for replacement a few weeks back

Sorry, yes Christmas intervened. It’s 25mm thick but all I can find for sale is 10 20 and 30mm honeycomb. Itbadly needs replacing.

Of course now I can find some

Hi Michelle,

I was working on the laser cutter yesterday, Gave it a good scrub before and after use - and there was already bits of blue paper there but most likely I slightly added to the situation . Unfortunately due to the stickiness of the honey comb this is an issue.

Apologies team!

New honeycomb has been ordered and will arrive on Friday. Will need half an hour or so to pull the frame apart and re-fit.

The guys at Fab Lab managed to buy new honeycomb by the meter for their machine and install it into their Trotech, this might be worth a look at the honeycomb table was expensive comparitively.

They offered makerspace an off cut for free.

Yeah, I’ve found a supplier for the mesh itself. £117, delivered, for enough to do 5 change-outs.

Is there the possibility to get the old honeycomb ultra sonically cleaned? Or something similar?

possibly, but not worth it IMO, 20 quid every year or so to replace the honeycomb doesn’t seem too bad a deal.

It’s all bent and notched too

The burning isn’t the problem, the issue is that people stand sheet material on the edge and the thin metal foil gets bent up and eventually over time leaves a dip in the most used area from damage over time.

It still should be cleaned to remove stickiness from the frame/rulers which will make it easier to keep clean

Yeah, Frame and ruler just needs a run over with Monsieur muscle.

Yes, but thats not the honeycomb, you can’t clean the honeycomb it will result in torn paper like in the photo and damage.

It can be pressure washed, and dried, my colleagues used to do that at my last job to extend the life as the honeycomb was much more expensive.

Yes I understand that…

I was just floating an idea about it being ultrasonically cleaned…

I think the ultrasonic thing they have is too small but good thinking, also I could be wrong but I am not sure if the sheets of metal foil are welded or just glued together.

Thanks for your input
