Online courses for those who can't get to the space

Hi all

Paul Smith and I have been running several courses at the space - Absolute Beginners Intro to Electronics, LED animations, Inkscape and, in the new year, Intro to Soldering.

None of these courses actually need to be run at the space, and I realise that there may be members who live far away, or who have other reasons why they cannot attend in person.

So I thought I’d ask explore offering online versions of the courses.
I’ll run these from a quiet environment, not the makerspace!
They would run for a similar duration on similar days.
I’d ship you the kits beforehand.

So, if you are interested, please tell me how this could be structured to meet your needs.

Thanks
Brendon

I think this is a great idea! I’d definitely be interested in the soldering one (although perhaps that’s something that also benefits from in-person guidance?)

Perhaps one way to structure it would be to have some of the pre-work and theory explained via video, with the in-person sessions then focused on the execution piece? Not sure though, as it’s nice the the sessions mix theory and practical tbh.

Beyond your suggestion, I was thinking it would be great if all of the in-person inductions had a video too, to help people who have already done the induction ensure each visit that they can remember the details etc.

I love this idea.

For me the difficulties are both the distance and the early starts, do you think the online classes may offer the opportunity for some different time slots?

I’m not sure about different time slots, as the length of each course kind of dictates when it will fit in the day. Happy to explore this further.
