New Director: Pete Hellyer

We are pleased to announce that @peter_hellyer is our new Director

There were several candidates, but we felt that Pete had the right combination of attitude and experience to work well with us while we transition to a more formal governance structure. There’s a lot on our plates right now, so it’ll be great to have some help!

Pete, we hope you prepared an acceptance speech; the stage is now yours :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers,
Dermot & Tom

I agree with TomN, Pete has been great driving the work fwd, doing alot himself and he has a hands on knowledge of the work going on and needed.

Only one thing to say…
Good luck and good work with everything Pete!

Out of curiosity, how long is the term for a Director?

Under our current articles, indefinite. As we go forward? Who can say? It’s totally up for debate as part of #members:governance

I certainly don’t plan to do this forever!

Congratulations Pete!

cool, whats the procedure for appointment at the moment? did I miss an election, or did the current Directors pick the most suitable candidate

This time only, it was confidential volunteers for a shortlist, then Dermot and I chose. Just for expediency’s sake - we need the extra hands and can’t wait for a “proper” process to get implemented.

It will happen differently next time.

understood, thanks

Posting more than the ‘like’ to say – I can’t think of three nicer blokes… but that is actually a worry. We need diversity and dissenting voices.

I think Pete will make a (highly) effective director but now this is settled there’s increased importance for devolved, inclusive governance.

Couldn’t agree more

I don’t think diversity for diversity’s sake is ideal, obviously the best candidate should be chosen, however unfortunately Makerspace isn’t yet that diverse so the number of candidates appropriate and willing/able to do the job is going to be limited.

In reality the directorship is less diverse than in the past with myself and Sarah stepping down, but this is only until we can figure out a proper governance system for Makerspace that is more sustainable, inclusive, and less burdensome.

As for dissenting voices, thats the job of the members and I think Pete has his own ideas which don’t always mesh with the directors in my view.

I also think the directors should be stepping away from steering Makerspace by the horns and letting the members do more, I think there are some major issues to be resolved around community, decision making, leadership, and the future strategy that have to be worked on soon, and to achieve all this they will need to work with members.

Just a quick note to say thanks for the kind words I’ve received today, both here and in private. I’m looking forward to the challenge and to working together to keep the space moving forwards in an inclusive and sustainable way.
