Metalshop at risk of shutting down

Im not talking about the person specifically… im referencing all ADHD’rs who may have used the metal shop and be tearing themselves apart if it was them or not!

Another paragraph of advocacy work for people to get a better grip on the realities of neurodivergence. :folded_hands:

Could somebody check if the mini-cnc calipers have reappeared too? Should be in a blue sleeve in one of the drawers under the mini-cnc, went missing around the same time

Checked yesterday and two calipers are missing in the woodshop a manual vernier one and a cheap battery one

There are a few woodworkers that would take issue with this. And I am sure metalwork has some members that has projects that require less than accurate readings!

Mark, I agree in principle with what you are saying, but I kind of struggle to believe a woodwork project may need precision down to 0.02mm

In any case, the issue here is that stuff is going missing! And that is not acceptable by any stretch!

No you are right, unless you are @Giles !!:joy:

But it is weird every caliper in the space has gone missing

I saw two different cheap digital calipers in the lathe drawers the other day

Yes two broken battery ones are in the lathe drawer :man_shrugging:

Visible + IR camera in every working room in “the other place” installed around 2022. Only management have access and the policy is that it would only be accessed for police level incidents, eg thefts. It’s never used, for example, finding out who is confusing the sink for the dishwasher.

It was weird at first but members seems to have accepted it.

I’m not promoting it, just saying there is precedent and we could learn from their experience.

It wasn’t intended as an insult or anything! I’d just be very surprised if anyone was able to get anything made of wood to within 0.01mm of a dimension!

There may be methods at a high cost but yeah, for wood, 0.01mm resolution, I would generally call this “spurious accuracy.”

[didn’t really want to discuss cameras]

Hi @Sean the mini CNC calipers have reappeared too.
They are now in the drawer under the small machine

Sounds like somebody had a project outside the space where they needed some good calipers and decided to borrow them, as opposed to an attempted theft in this case. Either way absolutely not on

I wish the person would be brave enough to admit the mistake, witch hunting take so much mental energy.

Ps. There are no consequences in admitting mistakes.

I agree, but when you’ve got people regularly posting on here with such strong aggression I don’t think that really encourages people to come forward openly.

I don’t read agression at any person in this post. Stephano was rightly upset, and that is communicated clearly. Things in the metal shop are trashed frequently and it makes it difficult to know what will be working when you come down. I often spend the first 30 minutes cleaning the lathe, oiling the ways, and re-squaring the toolpost with the 3-jaw as people havent left the machine in good order. We’ve had our live centre trashed shortly after it was bought and carbide tools are often damaged and not reported, so when members travel in there isn’t a working tool available. Closing the shop when a major problem happens like “borrowing without permission,” or theft as i was taught this was in school, is entirely reasonable. It did in fact result in the missing tool being returned. Disrespect of tools is dangerous, particularly of machine tools. If being treated like children is what it takes to shift the culture of “borrowing” then there are no objections from me.
