Maplin no more

Well, this Mash proabably isn’t most of ours’ experience of Maplin – mine is catalogues with space ships

But…feel a pang to see it go

I would say that it has been going down hill for a long time. I went to my local branch for some electronic components a little while ago, and decided afterwards that I wouldn’t bother again.

yeah, me too, I went there and there was really nothing interesting going on…

To be fair it’s not entirely their fault. They were never going to be able to compete with online suppliers from China on anything from individual components to finished gadgets.

I suppose the one chance they had was to provide expertise - but they cut staffing budgets to try and remain competitive.

Perhaps they could have converted to makerspaces?

Changing marketplaces…

What I really miss is the electronic surplus places.

I have the guts from a Sinclair portable TV somewhere that I bought, repaired and made a box for.

Cricklewood is still going and in your neck of the woods
