Looking for old or low-end wood turning gouges/chisels

Hello makers,

does anyone have some low-end turning tools, namely roughing gouges, skews, spindle gouges and a parting tools? Please comment here if so only. (lathetech tag does not notify us yet).

After going back and forth about the best way to run wood lathe inductions we have decided to put some focus on sharpening gouges. Traditional wood turning is art with its own ins and outs and what have yous and sharpening is one of them. When done correctly the results are very satisfactory and the skill is transferable to other areas (sharpening your router bits, knives, scissors,…).

@Giles has suggested including sharpening in L1 and following it up with members demonstration of acquiring necessary skill and understanding of it.

During L1 - induction of spindle turning, between centers and boring you’ll be shown how to sharpen the tools, you will practice sharpening on those low-end tools and after a couple of weeks you’ll demonstrate to an inductor you are able to independently sharpen them and understand how to orient yourself in Tormeks settings booklet and basic maintenance of the said sharpening system. After that you’ll be able to sign up for L2 - induction of face plate turning (bowls etc).

Giles briefly mentioned hand sharpening which might be a bit harder in achieving replicable results, so we will focus on use of Tormek instead.

I’ve heard a voice that suggested adding carbide tools. So far we haven’t familiarised ourselves fully with that type, use of these should theoretically make it easier for people to enter the world of woodturning and make it slightly cheaper, so far the understanding is that all they do is scraping and take a long time to achieve a mediocre result. Personally am happy to add them to our collection in the future, but so far we focus on turning in its purest form. If anyone wishes to discuss this or anything else than donation/sourcing of ow-end or old and forgotten woodturning tools, please create a new topic!

Exciting times ahead of us,

your lathetechs.
