Heyo! So folks may have seen me stalking about figuring out how I’m going to print a 3D case. If someone was up for buddying up on this, I’d be super grateful!
Basically, I’m putting together a case for a Steam Machine replacement build (partially 'cos I didn’t make the ballot, partially 'cos I can make something cooler myself with a few sacrifices ) using the BeamCase SW models I found on Printables.
I’ve actually taken a stab at prepping the files both as STLs and as sliced 3MFs so I could shop around for quotes in case I needed it quicker than I might be able to manage here (though I feel like I should do some more checks on them, as it’s my first stab at FDM and I think there’s tools available I’ve not tried…), so if you wanted to take a look at the Printables project, the files I’ve prepped, or the PDF on building it when it’s done, you can find them here:
I do still need to decide exactly what I want to print it in, too, as PLA’s completely out of the question for the thermal constraints, though that’s maybe something for the Projects topic…

You’ll want to print this is ABS probably. PETG might be fine but its thermal limit is around 70 degrees where ABS is just under 100. I think if your case temperature got to 70 there’d be worse issues other than the print warping but ABS is probably the safer bet.
Yeah, looking at what people on the Printables page have said, PET-G would probably be okay… but one of the constraints I’ve given myself is I want my main PC’s GPU and CPU to go into it when I upgrade that, so though it should be okay for now with a Ryzen 9600X, RX 9060XT and total TDP in the 200s, it’s eventually going to have a Ryzen 7800X3D, RTX4090 and total TDP around 600 - between that weight and heat I want to be a bit more careful!
Yeah, there’s some conflicting info on the Tools page, so I was going to wait for the induction / open day and see if someone knew =T. Not sure if I’ll risk PETG if the answer’s no, or see if I can pay someone to print the ABS parts for me and do the outer panels in PETG. I’m kind of leaning to PETG for the panels, anyway, as there’s more colours available, and using like, transluscent pink and teal could be fun!
No worries, and thanks for the thought! I’ve got a shockingly reasonable quote on Hygglo for someone to print (with the caveat that I’d have to travel to Luton or pay for shipping, but still), it’s just less fun than doing a bit more myself, starting to use FDM, picking up a new hobby, etc ^^;
Anyway, I can always get him to print the structural parts and do the outer panels at SLMS. Or maaaaybe consider getting inducted on the CNC and maybe doing the structural parts in aluminium. I’d need to figure out what the material costs and if that’s even feasible, but it would be… extremely cool if feasible.
This started as a side option when hunting for cases that would fit my fairly strict requirements (31-32cm deep, 11-35wide, <20 high, able to fit a 30.5cm graphics card), but it’s very quickly becoming a series of "oooh, but what if"s!
No but for different reasons; potential airborne carbon fibres which a VoC sensor won’t detect. IMHO PET-CF should be reserved for projects that justify it by request to the Techs.
I hope we get the VoC sensor asap, I’m not comfortable with the combination of some filaments and poor ventilation.
Also, thanks for chiming in, @lia and @maji! I can’t see that thread, probably because I’m not a full member yet (paid but waiting on processing, I think); does PLA only mean no PETG either?
Also, do we need a particular kind of VoC sensor? Like one that plugs into filtration, etc? I’ve got a basic one at home that’s just a display (and can sense a few things) that I use when printing resin. Is there anything we can do to mitigate the risks of CF / GF filaments?

The makerspace uses WooCommerce which sometimes has this issue, you might have an email from us in the spam or general mail which has a link to updating payment details are retrying payment? I used to use a similar system at my last job and we’d have this issue every now and then!
Otherwise, @welcome might need to cancel your original order and then you can try replacing the subscription online.
