Hey guys, I was thinking about that last half wall in the clean area that need covering… I have a friend willing to help us… If we choose to plaster it he can do it for free (in exchange of a couple of pints! )
He is a builder by trade so the result should be good! What do you think? @dermot
I thought we’d already bought ply to clad it with?
(I’d be happy with a painted plaster finish on this wall regardless)
Did we? Well in that case my bad… Didn’t know…
Well, I don’t know myself, hence the question mark
I think a render would be good.
Strangely I was going to ask you Stefano if you wanted to have a go at it with me?
A few people have commented how effective the half ply/half block looks in photos, though some say it has more of a rustic appeal when viewed in person? Rendering it might solve this.
Also, having done all this work ourselves it might be a point of pride to finish it without professional aid?
So… I’ve done small amounts of rendering and plastering…and worked alongside a phenomenal plasterer about 10 years ago.
We can render the wall to the level of the back of the other ply. That way, if it turns out to be a bad idea we can clad it easily later.
Are you up for it?
I’m totally up for it… Although i never plastered before! Anyway I’ll tell you what that guy advice me to do…
Yes. Get advice!
Those blocks are very dense concrete, so probably present their own challenge with getting a scratch coat to stick.
I am begging that you guys don’t ruin it. It should be wood please!
Yes he said that will just do not stick! He said that the fastest way is to glue plasterboard to it with the proper adhesive and plaster the plasterboard with a thin layer!
Thanks for the trust!!
It’s not and never has been about whether we’re capable but whether it’s the right way to do it.
The wall should be done right, over done for a fun project. If we want to plaster something then rebuild the snug and plaster that?
Don’t be so defensive about it.
I’m not against the graphic composition the split gives, but I’m definitely against it not being a high quality finish. The blocks look 'orrible.
I’d go for wood, but white render would work.
My post does mention doing this reversibly.
@stefanoromano I’m not sure about plasterboard on this wall. But sand/cement could be thin enough to put ply over later if it doesn’t work.
We rendered these blocks (and many other backgrounds with vastly different levels of suction) and the tendet aleays stuck. Quite different techniques though.
I thought the dusty side of that wall was always going to be rendered? But it got clad.
P.S. it MUST be a good finish!
That sounds like a good approach Dermot.
Dot and dab is a hatefull thing…
Just my opinion
A third way might be to use a two part lime system and wax it. Environmental friendly and easy to apply. I did one a few years ago and it is simply the most beautiful wall finish I have ever seen. It ticks all the boxes and it’s not render or ply, Dermot wouldlove it and Tom might also love it because it is a high end look. And it would also showcases a Environmental sound underutilized finish
Although I don’t think it makes a big difference, it’s a workshop after all
I am better st cladding than rendering and we had yo get it done
