Laser cutting question

hi all

ill be down today with a couple of young makers…or should I say Im baby sitting and they want to see the laser cutter in action.

Can I cut 18mm birch ply on it?

if anyone’s around with experience would be great if I could pick your brain as I’m new to the machine
cheers

18mm is too thick. The machine is rated up to 12mm but we haven’t really pushed it to find out what the limits are yet.

Plus needs to be laser ply, so we know what adhesives are being vaporised?

what if (he says cryptically and experimentally) you shift the z-axis up 2mm from a well focused start and do a few more passes? after a first couple of cuts

I imagine the edge quality would be really poor.

Tom suggested that. Tried it… And only cut about 2mm deep. So failed on that one

Thanks anyway

I think you’d need to do two tool lines tho. One at the correct focus, followed by the next cut at the higher level. You’ll need to set the laser to a slow speed and several passes whatever you do.

We have a lens that is good for cutting and engraving , longer lenses are for cutting only ,i think that a longer lens might be needed to get through 18mm .

I only read about it during the grand lens debate and have no experience.

Completely correct, a 3.0 or 4.0 lens I believe would solve this problem, that’s only £300.
