Laser cutter back in action!

@members THE LASER CUTTER IS WORKING AGAIN!!!

You bet I’m shouting!

It was and interesting journey and a worthy attempt to fix the machine (cheaply) ourselves, but in the end chucking a lump of money at it has solved.

Proper respect to @peter_hellyer @tobyspark and everyone who pushed it to the point of working again.

Looking good!

Is that Fusion 360?

Yup, I’ve just about mastered it but its horribly slow on my 2008 iMac…

I really need to try it out.

Looks fantastic.

Only -7? I’d go for -11. All ways turn it up to -11

Also you know you can get matt black acrylic? If you are thinking about black acrylic i mean. Is lovely stuff they basically do a kind of sand blast on the surface

Ah yes but that would mean the top end would max out at 33, I’m nothing if not an optimist!

Yeah still haven’t made my mind up about the materials, acrylic is good but is generally a bit too thick. I’d like the face to have a nice flat look and be legible from quite shallow angles.

I’m veering towards dark matt card with something like tracing paper as a diffusion layer immediately behind it (the numbers will all be LED backlit). It will probably have a layer of glass or perspex over it so durability isn’t an problem.

well done toby, pete et al.
Going fwd, are we keeping track of how much money we have/are spending on the laser cutter, and how much we are making from it in terms of usage fees.
I am enthusiastic about cutter but figure future policy out to be someway data driven?!

When I get around to it, there’s some video proof that it works again.

I am happy to run a couple of inductions, @pete you on board?

Woo hooooo!!!
Fantastic news… I’ve been following the thread and big thanks to everyone that helped in sorting it…

It would be very sad to see the laser cutter left broken due to the cost aspect. I am also concerned about its future should something happen again! I know there will be discussions about how much can be spent on it and would just like to add something for when this is happening.
So a thought…
How many people are members only to use the laser cutter? How much would their monthly fee come to. I’ve spent £160 since the beginning of the year + cutting costs. I am one member!
Before everyone replays - yes, I understand this is not the way things are calculated and it is my choice to only use the laser cutter. Yes, this may not coincide with the way the space views memberships and the community aspect. However I just want to highlight that there is more than one way to look at how much the laser is costing or actually contributing to the space. With any kind of successful organisation or company some elements cost more than others in the process. I do not believe it is a black and white decision. A maker space without a laser cutter (in my opinion) would be truly lacking indeed. When a decision is being made I hope it is not the non laser cutter users that are shouting the loudest.

Very much looking forward to getting back in to try out some designs… Has anything changed with the red fobs for shutter or laser cutter access in recent times?

The reality is it hasn’t cost us very much when you compare it to any other option.

And it’s an essential tool in a hack or makerspace.

23 posts were split to a new topic: Laser Cutter Fees

Split this off as we went massively off topic, and this doesn’t affect the laser cutter right now, it’s ready for use.

Hello everyone. Could I possibly book the induction for the laser printer? Sometime next week would be ideal. Thank you
