The laser techs and I are happy to announce that after a long 5 week outage the laser is back!
We have a shiny new lid, new air feed and belt.
Please will all @laserusers read the following notes before using the laser again:
The damage to the laser which caused the outage was caused by extensive fire damage. We cannot implore enough how crucial it is that users NEVER leave the laser or stop observing the cut whilst it is active. Fires can start very easily and quickly and if you are not watching the machine serious damage can be caused, not to mention potentially cause a fire in the building!
I repeat, NEVER leave the laser un-attented when cutting.
Never cut anything that you aren’t 100% sure is laser safe, a list of laser safe materials can be found online, you’re also always welcome to reach out to the @lasertechs and ask, we are friendly I promise
Lasers are very high precision, expensive and ultimately dangerous pieces of equipment, this current repair was looking at costing upwards of 1000 pounds. Please treat the laser with the respect it commands.
If you see or hear anything unusual within the laser STOP the job immediately. You can do this by pressing stop within Ruby or Simply open the lid, if this occurs please notify the laser techs and we can advise.
If you would like some help or advise with how best to operate and use the laser please feel welcome to message me or one of the other techs. I will be running some supplementary laser training sessions to go over my best and efficient workflow protocol so you can extract and make the most of ever second of your booking. So keep an eye out for that, like wise if anyone ever sees me on the laser please feel free to come ask any questions you may have.
Bookings for the laser can resume as usual, i cant wait to catch up with the laser and enjoy using it again Thanks to the Lasertechs and Directors for helping getting the laser back online.
Glad to see it back up and running. Good job @lasertechs.
As a side note: I found the little depth tool we hang on the laser head in one of the welding overall coats in the metal area last night. I don’t think it was missing for long but I put it back in the inside lip of the laser unit where it belongs. Please never let that tool wander away from the laser machine, thank you!
Hi @lasertechs, cutting 9mm plywood on 0. SLMS Plywood 9mm (new) material setting, had small spits of flame on the horizontal cuts (not the vertical). Additionally, this setting did not manage to cut the ply. I won’t use this material setting again, any further advice on protecting laser? (Link shows vid of laser)
Hello @lasetechs, I have been in to use the laser yesterday and had a lot of trouble cutting through acrylic. I have previously had no problem at all, but found the settings I used to use before Christmas are not working for me at all now.
One of the reasons seems to be that the metal focus measuring stick seems to have been altered. it took me a while to work out, but the laser was not in focus at all and I struggled to cut in a thin neat line. I could just make out ome markings on the metal focus stick, where it had previously been set to. I took a photo but not sure if you can see, (if you zoom in you might be able to tell). So this may need looking into.
Also some of the cuts when I did finally get through - after many passes, looked as it it had a slight slanty angle to it.
