Laminate ply forming workshop @ the Institute of Making

This is what I’m doing and where I am today…

Discourse has loaded the photos in a bit of a random order I’m afraid. Rearranging them into a sensible order is left as an exercise for the reader.

How are the blue formers shaped?

Hot wire through foam I reckon.

We are using a big bandsaw

Blue foam is good stuff, never seen anything moulded to it before, melts in vac former, how does the ply retain its shape after, you just leave it for a while?

It’s 3 or 5 layers of 0.8mm birch veneer. You’re making your own plywood, effectively.

More work from today

Wow nice stuff
I was planning on doing some with some oak I have lying around, but using two shapes + clamps. The vacuum thingy looks way better though

It is. It clamps everything with a totally even clamping pressure and you only need to make one mould.
