Kickstarters!

How many Kickstarters and successful new products will Makerspace create?
I bet a few. ‘Why not have a discussion area for this?’ I thought.
I’ve created one for an eco friendly aerosol Green Oil EcoSpray Lubricant: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/makeitslip/green-oil-ecospray-lubricant-for-bicycles

I found making a good video helps, and telling as many people as you know, it makes interesting connections.

Anyone got any other tips?

It’s been discussed in the past, possibly only once around somebody who was planning one.

But there’s form. I didn’t use kickstarter, but I got £50k in pre-orders to get a production run of this made: http://sparklive.net/dfuser (that website is a more recent incarnation from when it went retail for a few years).

So happy to discuss this kind of thing when there’s something concrete. Also, Mariana is a new member who came to last night’s members meeting, and her thing is making videos and marketing more generally.

Nice one! Congratulations, I just got funded, so happy

That’s a long video, they say videos have to be lesst han 3 minutes these days! Is the device stand alone, or does it require that box at the back you mention?

Is it HDMI, or VGA?

Love it, that’s great, can’t beleive it didn’t exist already (like all good inventions!)

Well done on getting funding. Now the real fun starts… eeek!

Strictly speaking, this was the pitch video: https://vimeo.com/47778774

But that’s still 12 minutes =]

The difference is that I already had an audience who knew I might have the ‘breakthrough’ they wanted, and it was up to me to convince them it was real.

And to illustrate the difference between getting funded and shipping, the code running in that demo – that seems near enough feature complete – is c.2000 lines, 3000 short of what eventually shipped.

So you didn’t manage to make enough of the unit to meet orders?

That’s the best problem in business to have

What’s the retail price on it, do you still make and sell it?

I’ve got a whole talk on this, pretty slides and all. You hear about the massive successes, but then no details get out 'cos it’s all still commercially sensitive. And projects that don’t go so well don’t get talked about for entirely understandable and dispiriting reasons. But this was a modest success, so I thought I’d do a proper post-mortem. Normally, at this point I’d simply link to you a recording of the talk, but it isn’t recorded…

The ‘Purchase and Production’ section at the bottom of the website mostly answers your question, and links you to lots o’posts on my personal site

Oh, and, I’m no fan of aerosols (so wasteful, aside from anything else) but pretty much the only one I ever use beyond a one-off is bike spray, so well done on the product!
