I think so.
Anyone know if there’s a copy of XP floating about?
In theory there is one in the space. In practice…
It was on the black Ikea shelf…
If job control was updated at the same time that the PC was replaced, could we re-install from the discs (which I am presuming are the earlier version of Job Control that was on the previous computer) and test it? Cat and I can re-install the software from the discs now and try it out with trustee permission and if there are no other objections.
@trustees
It’s great everyone is trying to be helpful but this has all been done.
It’s the computer that is failing not the software as we’ve tried three versions now.
We need to dig out another computer and try that.
I have found one of the HP machines that we picked up last year. Should I plug it in and try? I seem to recall Adam giving a warning about one or more of the graphics adapters on them.
I think @adamjpage was talking about a TV/monitor that killed graphics cards. Maybe some of those PCs are affected.
Yes basically don’t use the small monitor with dad player. Use the existing monitor.
OK, I won’t use the black TV/DVD player.
Surely it has a warning sticker on it?
Or should be filed accordingly in the round cabinet?
Let’s give it away or put it in electronics recycling.
I attempted to start up the HP desktop I found in phase 1 connected to the laser PC’s monitor. The first time it said that the system clock was wrong, and had options to press F1 or F9-12 to proceed. I had the laser PC’s USB keyboard attached, but it didn’t work. I tried a PS/2 keyboard I found, but no luck. On subsequent restarts, nothing showed on the screen again, which is what Joe said happened to Adam when he was testing the others. I don’t know if this was one that Adam thought had its VGA adapter blown, but it did show something on screen the first time.
If anyone is coming in today i have left a laptop in the space can yget it a coppy of xp
Reading this thread, and recalling some of the earlier discussion on this matter, it seems that several people are implicating the memory of the laser PC as responsible for the problem. New memory can be had cheaply, so why haven’t we tried doing that?
I trust your judgement Andrew!
@adamjpage ran memtest86 I believe.
Out of interest, why does Windows XP keep getting mentioned here?
Because i don’t have a copy . And i have put my known good laptop in the space so that we can try a different computer .
If we had a copy we could eliminate 50% of the hardware
I think i have found a copy so will be able to find out what is wrong with job control today or tomorrow
I don’t see how this helps us when we will likely be running it on Windows 10 in future.
Why not put that on your laptop, or 7 if it’s available?
I’m just wondering why XP? You’re not the only one to mention it.
