Inductions

I’ve looked for an inductions thread can’t find one.
A few threads tailed off after RAs.
Thought Ild start one.

Where are we at?

You’re right on the zeitgeist as usual Paul.

There is a loose ‘working group’ that’s gone a bit quiet, but is now about to swing into action.

A date(s) will be put out soon and we’ll start gathering people and resources.

That’s great news.

We (:laughing::laughing::laughing:) look forward to further updates.

Exciting!!!

Tomorrow will be another two weeks with no update about inductions.

We deserve an update.
We don’t know what’s going on.
The people involved might, but the broader membership has no idea what is going on and is not being communicated to us.

The notes from the meeting just say something about videos. If that is the only strategy it seems likes months and months of work.

What is going on?

I think someone needs to project manage this ASAP as its not fair to paying members to be left without access to tools and no updates for weeks / months at a time.

Yes, I’m sure you’re not alone in feeling frustrated, plus the notes from the meeting are incomplete.

It’s for the @woodtechs to announce, but it looks like exciting stuff is imminent!

I don’t think the “we’re not going to say anything until the big announcement” technique is working.

You might find it better to talk to Joe directly and ask him, as he isn’t one for Discourse appearances.

As a result of yesterday meeting we agreed 2 major points about this
1: we 're going to run the first session ASAP as a test. That means 2 or 3 people that are already experienced will go through an induction and help the inducters to fine tune the process! Please see this as an induction for inductees  I understand that seems a waste of time but is absolutely needed given that is the first time that the tooltechs induct someone! After that first session the process will speed up a lot.

2: I suggested a “way around” the induction problem and in accordance with the directors we are coming up with something.
I explain, as a way around I mean a way to don’t totally forbid the use of tools to the not inducted members, a way to start using the tools supervised (probably on a one to one basis but this has to be decided) so people can start familiarizing with the workshop and the tools.

Needed before all of this is a last burst of effort in the woodshop, is basically all done, we need a couple of willing hands and an analytic approach to clear all the carp!

I want to use your post, Paul, to tell everyone something, we are really sorry that this is taking long, but please everyone try to understand that the machinery in that place are DANGEROUS, and I mean properly dangerous, like nothing else we have in the space, that’s why we are trying hard to have a proper induction procedure!

We are working for you guys!

Ok that sounds great.
Thanks for all the work!

Could we have an update more regularly to let us know what’s going on? I think that would be useful for all the members.

Bump

We did a prototype wood lathe induction on Monday,

@Beth ran it it, it was great. She can give the lowdown on this better than me.

You already bumped it!

Yep I did a lathe induction. It needs some changes. Also I need to write up some paperwork to go with it. What came out of the evening was that there are going to be 2 levels of lathe induction, one that will cover a general introduction to the late and spindle turning only and then a second for faceplate turning and drilling. Also you will need to have had a general workshop induction first. There a few other equipment things I need to sort out too but this is not a big problem. After that the only thing limiting people being inducted on the lathe is my schedule. I’m going to start a new post about the lathe so everyone can hear what’s going on.

That’s sounds great.

Can we have an update on the other inductions?
It would be good to know what the plan is.

Are you trying to get all the inductions ready or tackling them individually?

I think it would be a good idea to just do an induction from start to finish on one machine, say the pillar drill or cut saw, as they are heavily used tools.

Get a few people inducted and see how the process works from end to end. Get comfortable with the whole process.

Otherwise trying to think about doing them all could easily be overwhelming.

But it’s your call.

This really needs an update from @woodtechs

I know there’s various discussions going on behind the scenes, but would be great to share with the membership.
