Inductions to space

just saw the first aid and fire posts. We should prob include them in the general “space induction” that people are given and backdate it to make sure all members get it.

Yes, Sarah Jones and Richard started work on a general induction. We should pick this up and start doing it.

Also useful to have a list of first aiders.

do u have a link to it, even without a definitive induction we should prob start using what we have and flag areas in induction that are still undefined
have we agreed that we dont have storage for members right now?
what is the policy of bringing friends into the space?
what is policy adn consequence for lending people your fob to use space.
what is the bare minimum participation for members?
what is the desired participation for members (in building/maintaining the space, how do we aim to achieve desired level of participation)

Fantastic initiative thanks @conomara @SarahJ

A bunch of good questions there
Conor.

Lending a fob is a serious breach of trust and an absolute no no. We don’t have a policy but I’d probably push for an immediate ban.

We are happy for members to bring the occasional friend.

Desired/minimum participation? Well knows?

Let’s discuss:
A half day on construction, an open evening hosting every 4 months? Clean the toilet every 2 months?

Obviously more is better.

This is for members who use the space.

Members who pay £20 a month and don’t come could probably be seen as doing their bit to support already?

We still need members to take on the @orientation roles (was it called that?)

I’ll start gently hounding people to host open evenings etc in the next week or so. We do make it clear that it’s a members run organisation, so I’m happy to do that.

I can’t really take any credit, it was @Rs1771 who has done all the work on it.

Hey, can i get an induction to the space? or how about a test induction if we are not ready to role out?

This is an important subject, members need a way of getting orientated.

we could do some test inductions for a few of the existing members to develop a working induction

As a relatively new member I would quite like an induction

I’ve asked Dermot to give me an induction this Saturday. I can’t remember who is on induction team, but if you have formalised anything then can the info/docs to me or him before then, thanks.
If not then he is going to give me an ad-libbed general induction, and then ask me some questions on what i’ve learned.
We will create a w.i.p induction based on this (or on an existing one if there is one) and I will induct a couple people then, create a pyramid scheme of inductions.

If you got a better idea turn up on saturday and ill listen to you.

@welcome is this within your purview?

So… What might ease this forward:

  • we start an ‘induction to the space’ Wiki and link it here.

  • if @SarahJ can find the document she and Rs worked up and bring those points over

  • we chuck a whole load of ideas at it, especially welcome from newer members whose experience coming in fresh will be invaluable.

  • we busk our way though it on Saturday!

Some specific ideas:
Just a list of stuff rather than a suggestion of format.

Show them how to open the door.
Show them how to open shutter.
Show Open shutter button on inside of door.
How to turn lights on/off
Ventilation
What to check when you are last to leave - eg check things like soldiering irons are turned off etc.
Tell them about the gate
Tell them about the rubbish.
Tell them about not leaving the door open
Tell them about giving tours to people who pop their heads in
Induction process
General Health and safety - it’s a workshop
Supervising Kids
Inviting visitors

Folks can start creating something here:

Introduction to Makerspace

  • What it is and isn’t
  • What you should expect
  • What we expect of you
  • Short history

Access to the space

  • How to use the door
  • How to use and get shutter access
  • Exit proceedure
  • Lights
  • Emergency procedures
  • Ventilation

I’ve created a wiki post for us to edit, I’ll let someone else do that.

Of course, most of these topics have in-depth articles of their own. This should just be a high-level summary I think?

Yes, ‘orientation’ so they know where they are and where to go to find things/info.
