I think this is to be celebrated. Of course it’s not representative. Of course there is more to be done. But nonetheless many actions by many people have increased the likelihood of that happening, and working out well once through the door.
Inclusion and diversity at Makerspace
Hello I’m a woman with a baby and I could host a parent/coffee/activity I also like the more “feminine arts” so happy to help
Hi Sabrina, welcome to Makerspace. I’d be happy to help with the logistics of a workshop and could do the shutter access during the day.
Only proviso being that the space is fine for babes in arms but a bit of a non-starter for crawlers to age 4 or 5. It would take 100% of someone’s attention to keep a toddler safe in the space for example so anyone coming to a workshop would need to be aware of that. But an early afternoon session for people with babies (hopefully!) asleep in their buggies could work really well.
Sorry Dermot these last two posts probably need to be a new thread.
No problem! A playpen worked well for us when bringing a small one to work. Until he could climb right out…
Yes I was just thinking a folding playpen and some of those squashy mats would be a good thing to have tucked away somewhere in the clean room.
Sounds fab!!! Let’s organise something!
Great. Are you around this Thursday or Friday during the day? I’m free between school run times. We could meet in the space to have a chat about it.
@dermot I am not making accusations but no I am not aware of any action being taken either. I will message you privately about this as a reminder of the issue incase it was missed.
@andrew_d I’ve seen that article, it’s a pretty hotly debated topic.
@tobyspark Yes it is a good sign, but let’s not pat ourselves on the back right yet.
@sabtab That would be a fantastic contribution!
@sarahJ/@dermot Create Space has an area for kids with toys, it’s been discussed before, the social area could be a place for that.
Ooh we could have a little stash of toys with a maker theme! I have stuff in the loft I could donate.
Excellent…
Do folks see how small little things like this could be done with relatively little effort to be more inclusive, if we had an tablet with some games people like Toby/Tom could come down with kids and leave them to play for a bit, especially if we keep the doors shut.
Small changes make a big difference, but we have to consult people confidentially, consider how we can change and collectively accept this change is necessary.
I’m around Friday afternoon? 2pm? Does that leave you enough time for the school run?
Further data point: Current new signups are running at exactly 2:1 men:women.
Yes great, see you there. I’ll need to leave at 3:00 but that gives us plenty of time.
Explain?
Could you elaborate on your confusion?
How did you work that one out?
Personally I think that it is relatively obvious the majority of the membership is in the middle class.
I take it you don’t agree.
It is not obvious to me. That is the reason I am asking how did you work it out? Is there some means testing going on behind the scenes?
Maybe we should send out a voluntary survey?
