How do I actually join?

I followed the sign up process, but reached some point where I was supposed to wait - to be e-mailed a link, I think (but I forget now precisely.) I didn’t get to the direct debit bit.

Now when I try to log in it says account not activated and I can’t go any further!

Hi, you should have been sent a confirmation email to verify your email address. Have a look in any junk or filtered inboxes you might have.
