Is anyone interested in fish ? Or aquatic reptiles ?
I managed to kill a tankful of guppies but our swordtails are doing well - we even have a couple of babies.
I have got a fish tank and all the pumps and lights ect , if you want to ether take them away or start a tank in the space (if enough people are interested ) .
I quite enjoyed setting up tanks but have no interest in keeping fish.
Like this idea but never managed to keep even a plant alive.
How much effort is it to clean out the tank or can this be automated somehow? If so, we can automate feeding too right? I’m into the idea of zero maintenance pets.
They are far from zero maintenance…
I think most of the ones you see in public places have weekly maintenance contracts on them. I don’t think it would be fair on the fish to have a tank in the space.
Fair enough. I might try again with a plant, see how far I get.
Fish tanks require daily, weekly and monthly tasks.
Daily:
Feeding - you can automate this to an extent but that requires equipment. If done manually by multiple peopel you must make sure it’s not overdone. Overfeeding is the biggest killer of fish
Lighting which is much easier to automate
Checking temperature - should be an easy automation if you have some arduino like stuff lying around. Unless you go for coldwater fish only.
Weekly:
Water change - 10-20% of volume
Trim dead leaves off plants
Clean glass of algae
Monthly:
Change filter media
My advice would be that if you are going to do this then do it properly. Nothing sadder than a half empty fish tank with no lights covered in algae.
It didn’t occur to me that this was foot the space…
I love fish, but first lets see if we can wash up mugs and clean the toilet regularly before we take on another maintenance task
ermmm we are limited on space as well
Ouch!
Isn’t necessarily for the space. If someone wants to keep fish at home I can share what knowledge I have on the subject.
My first thought was that someone would take the tank away and do it at home.
I want to get rid of the stuff and iif anyone wants it its yours to do what you want with,.
Ps i have very little interest in looking after fish .
The dishwasher is plumbed in if someone knows how to use it.
I have never had one and would not know how to use it without the book of words
@david how about cleaning out poop from the bottom of the tank - or is this filter media? I thought that might be something in the pump/filtration system that get’s replaced?
@joeatkin2 joking aside I’m interested if no one else is - to have at home I mean.
PS I can induct you on the dishwasher next week.
Filters do both mechanical and biological filtration. The biological filtration takes weeks to start which is why you wait a few weeks before introducing fish to a running system.
If you are using an undergravel filter then the gravel is providing both mechanical and biological filtration. If not then any waste that fall to the bottom will break down eventually and be filtered out of the water by whatever filter you use.
You can also look up aquaponics where plants are used as a filtration medium and the waste from the fish is used as food for plants in a closed loop. Sometimes on a large scale. You grow plants you can eat and fish you can eat as well.
Do we have dishwasher tablets? We seemed to be out when I last checked.
Have put one in the kitchen
Its yours if you want it
how would the fish make anything in the absence of opposable digits?
would the toilet have to be changed to facilitate them,
how would it impact on the ramp situation
