First project - repairing the spare wheel holder ring for my car

Hello everyone,

I’ve just joined after attending the open day earlier this week and already have some projects in mind for furniture and repair work.

I’ve recently acquired an old 4x4 with a spare tyre holder that needs some TLC. The locking mechanism has worn out, and I want to replace it with a new buckle and latch.

The Challenge:

I’m not sure which tools are best suited for this task, as I’ve never done anything like this before. I was wondering if anyone could provide some guidance on how to proceed? Specifically, what type of drill bits or other equipment would be necessary to remove the rivets safely and effectively?

What I am planning:
1. Removal of rivets that the latch mechanism is held by - I see there are removal tools available for this. Does the space have one or are there better ways to do this?
2. Painting of the new latch with some weatherproof paint (I’ve already got a replacement latch)
3. Installation of new latch using rivets - I’m guessing the rivet gun(s) will be in the metalworking section?

My Experience Level:

I’m a beginner when it comes to DIY projects, but I’m eager to learn and take on this challenge. If anyone has experience with similar projects or can offer advice on the best tools to use, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance for your help and guidance!

I am not sure if there is a rivet removal tool. If not you can also get away with a drill bit and a center punch. I am sure people can guide you with that if unsure (Id be happy to help if I’m around).

There are rivet guns in the metal shop and they’re pretty easy to use, but I do remember some being better than others so it may require a bit of trial and error to find the good one (Its been a while, so the bad ones may have been removed by now).

The plan seems good though, should work fine.
