Risk Assessment

Identification of hazards and risks

  • Work pieces jamming - Medium
  • Hands and fingers can contact wood being turned - Medium
  • Clothing/hair can become entangled - Medium
  • Wood dust can be inhaled - Medium
  • Noise damage - Low
  • Inadvertent starting of the machines - Low
  • Ejected chuck keys, drills, swarf, work pieces, etc. - Medium
  • Unexpected spinning of hand held workpieces could cause injuries - Medium
  • Cuts - High
  • Lack of space around machine can lead to operator being pushed by passers by - Medium
  • Slips due to slippery floor surfaces - Medium

Control Measures

  • Ensure space around machine is clear of obstructions and the operator does not block access to other parts of the room
  • No loose clothing to be worn. No jewellery to be worn. Long hair to be tied back.
  • When cutting for extended periods of time, wear the ear defenders provided
  • Ensure guard is in good working order and lowered to reveal minimum required height of blade.
  • Ensure that the guide rollers and thrust wheel are aligned correctly with the blade.
  • Push sticks to be used instead of hands when close to blade.

Before use

  • Ensure blade is tight and unbroken
  • Make sure that your work piece is not thinner than 3 tooth blades; thin pieces can catch on teeth and be thrown out.
  • Lower guard to minimum height required for your work piece
  • Ensure thrust bearing is just away from back of blade
  • Ensure guide bearings are nearly touching, but not gripping the blade
  • Ensure that the back of the blade teeth will not touch the guide bearings when the blade is pressed against the thrust bearing
  • Check that the area around the saw is free of obstructions and trip hazards
  • Remove all loose jewellery and clothing and tie back hair
  • Wear appropriate PPE equipment
  • Do not wear gloves; they can get entangled in the blade

During Use

  • Do not cut without extraction running
  • Do not keep the blade running while not cutting
  • Stand with feet apart and move the work piece slowly through the saw with both hands
  • When pushing the piece close to the blade, use a pusher stick

After Use

  • Tidy up any dust/chippings that were not extracted
  • Set the guard to its lowest extent
  • If you set a non-zero cutting angle, re-set the bed to level
