Backgammon intrument / midi or light sensors? max msp/ableton setup + electrics build

hey everyone! i am a big backgammon fan who is really inspired by the idea of making a sonic instrument out of the board. ideally, i would like to make a midi-instrument like OPENCHESSBOARD, but i think to start a light-sensored trigger seems like an easier idea like the sonic chessboard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZlhjvS8Wv4&t=18s

i could also do an audio to midi setup, with contact microphones in the board, but in a performance space i am scared this would cause feedback/ not be game-dependent.

my main curiosities is how much control i can have with my limited knowledge… like how much more circuitry would be required for certain functions like different coloured pieces having different amount of light sensors that respond to areas of the board/ when going higher up a arrow on the board can that change the outputs etc…

i am pretty new to electronics in this way, i hope to learn as a go along! but if anyone has any advice as i embark on this journey… or has made sensor based instruments…i intend come along to the electronics meet ups to work on it! (if they are still going, its been about a year since i have been a member)

 looking forward to trying this out…just in the ideas/brainstorming stage at the moment

Heya! Sounds like a fun project. The electronics area has microcontroller boards, sensors etc. you can use. @Brendon_Hatcher runs great electronics courses. The last one was yesterday but it might be good to keep a lookout for the next one!

Electronics night is back on every Thursday from 7pm, hope to see you there :slightly_smiling_face:
