This came up in @mike’s post, so though I’d ask the question more widely.
Who has experience in welding? And what type of welding and experience?

I would like to do more!
I can do MIG and stick, and I used to be able to do gas too but haven’t done for a while.
My MIG isn’t really portable (being 3 phase and quite big) but happy to run some welding classes with the space’s kit - I could bring another stick welder too so we’d have another place.
Probably needs to wait until the construction is more finished though.
A post was merged into an existing topic: Spend Some Money - Hopes and Dreams Edition
MIG is much easier for beginners, but requires more expense in terms of consumables.
It’s also more versatile in that it can be used to weld smaller gauge material.
Also it requires other stuff like a welding curtain or other place safe to do it and mask. Let’s focus on key areas rather than diluting the funds to be everything for everyone.
I may have a welding curtain I could donate. But yes, you’re looking at about a grand for a decent MIG and that would take a grand away from somewhere else.
A welding curtain would be great for us to be able to start using the existing stick welders more regularly though!
Let’s do this as a membership pledge but let’s not worry about it now as the funding is already spread too thin.
Agreed. Low priority, but would be fun!
I agree it would be fun and useful.
Let’s also risk assess it. Proper extraction is necessary for more than ‘a few minutes in the hour’
Have a look here:
Safety isn’t the issue here. Cost is.
We pretty much have everything apart from extraction.
aye, for stick (and if @RichM) is serious about loaning his curtain, we’d be mostly safe Extraction probably important though, it got a bit noxious in there when we did a spot of welding the other week…
Bad news - welding curtain has gone AWOL.
Good news - I found another stick welder so I can bring two to ‘welding night’
Open door to mettle work night lol
I’ve done ARC weldeing and oxy-accetaline welding more oxy as that was my home setup and I did a lot of jewlery back then. Oh on a side note jewelry and electronics manufacturing share a lot of the same tools.
So I’ve been doing some research about home/hobbyist brazing gear. My initial goal is to make a front luggage rack for one of my bikes and the internet tells me this is more than doable with a MAPP torch. Technically I believe this is now called MAP/Pro.
Anyway, I notice there’s a bottle of this at the space, which is anecdotally used for lighting BBQs and fags. Joe wasn’t sure that the flame was concentrated enough for brazing.
As I’m keen to crack on with my project, and aware of the regs around explosive gases at the Makerspace, I was wondering if anyone was interested in learning some brazing at my flat (outside, obviously!).
Secondly, I’m not sure if this is covered on Discourse but I couldn’t find specific reference to it:
Are members allowed to borrow space-owned tools for off-site use? Specifically the blowtorch mentioned above, although it might prove unsuited to the task. The reason I ask is because it can’t actually be used on-site, as far as I can tell. My flat is in Streatham, about 10 mins bike ride or a short bus ride+walk away. The slight complication here is safety: I’ve not been formally instructed in brazing or safe use of a blowtorch and obviously we’re talking about molten metals, explosive gases, carbon monoxide emissions(?) etc. I’m a responsible adult (just) so I can look after myself, but I don’t want the space to be liable if I or any other space member gets hurt on my property through their own negligence.
Sorry if this has become a bit rambling. The tl;dr is:
We use the blow torch all the time for pluming don’t think that thers is a problem using it for small brazing
