14 hour flight with a 2 and 4 year old

Calling all makers… I need to build a version of one of these for my 2 and 4 year old to make some long haul flights…
https://youtu.be/aHU5oxWTArw I will probably convert some trunkies into something similar, anyone want to get involved? I could use some held with the mattress/textile bit…
I would buy the original item as I value it’s design but it is not yet available…
Thoughts and comments welcome.

What a great product idea. We have a trunki but I always found it quite annoying. It’s also quite short and squat compared to this. You might be better off using the carcass of a normal wheelie suitcase to get the right height.

Neat idea.
I’d love it if it worked (for our 2 & 3.5 years) but worry how usable it is in practice.
Can they sleep with the seat belt on in case of turbulence.
If there is turbulence (seat belt sign goes on) then you have to wake them up to sit in the chair.
They say it’s good up to 7 years which seems a bit of a push.
In the video they have the head behind the seat in front. What happens if the person in front reclines their seat?
How much space is actually left in the box after the mattress is in there?

Could you lift the arm rest between your two kids seats and lie then across (top and tail)? or too much squirming and feet in faces.
Can you do the same with a board and a couple of folding legs (like the ones under a table in a campervan)

. Then you can choose any other luggage or ride on.

My sister has a trunki and it doesn’t look very stable but my niece likes it.
We have a trunki yondi neck pillow which helps stop cricked necks when sleeping in the car (might be useful).
Keep us posted on what you go for.

Cool idea! Seems like the important part is a suitcase of the right height for the bottom of an airplane seat, the platform and padding would be easy… being able to ride it just a bonus… I have a 4yr old and an 11hr flight in March, so definitely keep us updated!

Whatever it is, it feels like it needs to be vacuum formed.

I leave quite soon so will have to mod a trunki and possibly develope the idea for future trips. Got it pretty much figured out using some 3D printed parts, Ali tube, plywood and a stock trunki… will try post some sketches soon…

Jonathan, why hasn’t this existed for years, it’s a clever and really essential piece of equipment for air travel!!!

Maybe they’re an extension of those fun ‘scooter suitcases’ for kids which are also clever.

Hope you get it made before you go! Lucky you off to the Sun…

So… with some aluminium tube, a trunki, some laser ply and a big of 3D printing, my bed box is looking good… some pics of the build below but I need to get a good shot of the finished item. The mattress is still to be completed but will post that too when it’s done…

Looks good! Does the ply fit into the trunki?

That was an original aspiration but as the trunki’s shape is tapered, it meant that the board would get too narrow and so I have kept it seat width and will carry it separate from the trunki…

Yes they are an annoying shape! Even a big picture book doesn’t fit in easily.

Let us know how the flight goes. And good luck!

Great idea!

Will bring the completed bits into the space sometime when I’ve returned and confirm it is all flight safe… all printing part files etc is available for any takers…

Once you’ve come back we should make a video and instructable about this. It’s great stuff.

After 2 x 14-hour flights with a 2 and 4 Year old I think on @Jonathan’s return we should buy him a beer and let him sit quietly in the darkened snug for a couple of hours.
Looks good, hope the trip goes well !
